Which HSK level am I?

Study time is a poor guess at your level. This short recognition check reads what you actually know: you see a word, you pick the meaning, and it climbs the ladder until the words get hard. At the end you get an estimated HSK band, in both the 3.0 and 2.0 scales, and a direct link into the right word table.

Quick answer

How do I know which HSK level I am?

Your HSK level is best estimated from recognition, not from how long you have studied. This check shows words drawn across HSK 1 to 6, climbs as you answer, and places you in the band where your accuracy falls from comfortable (around 90 percent) to shaky (below 75 percent). That crossover rung is your working level. It takes about five minutes and needs no account.

How it works

  1. See a word, pick the meaningEach item shows a hanzi with pinyin and four English glosses. Choose the one you know, or guess.
  2. The check climbsAnswer well and it moves up the ladder; miss a band twice and it stops, converging on your real level.
  3. Get your band and a next stepYou land on an estimated HSK level with a direct link into that level's word table, in frequency order.

How the check finds your rung

A worked example. Your accuracy per band decides where you stand.

  1. 1Level 1 words的 · 我 · 好 · 人96% ✓
  2. 2Level 2 words时间 · 因为 · 觉得91% ✓
  3. 3Level 3 words经过 · 习惯 · 环境72% edge
  4. 4Level 4 words效率 · 观点 · 竞争41% shaky
Crossover falls between Levels 3 and 4, so this learner's working level is HSK 3.0 Level 3 (roughly HSK 2.0 Level 3). Drill Level 3, then start Level 4.

An honest limit

This is a fast estimate, not the official HSK exam. It measures recognition vocabulary only, not grammar, listening, or writing, and it is not affiliated with Hanban or Chinese Testing International. Treat the result as a sensible starting rung on the ladder, then adjust once you are in the word tables.

Questions about placement

Is the placement test free?

Yes. Every tool on Mandarin Steps is free and ungated. There is no account, no email capture, and nothing is saved or sent anywhere. You can take the check as many times as you like.

Does it test HSK 2.0 or HSK 3.0?

The words are drawn from the shared core of both standards, so the estimate holds either way. Once you reach a level's word table you can toggle between the six-level HSK 2.0 and nine-level HSK 3.0 structures to match your exam.

How accurate is a five-minute check?

It is designed to place you within one band, which is enough to stop you restarting from Level 1 or drowning in a level that is too hard. It samples across HSK 1 to 6 and converges on the band where your accuracy drops from comfortable to shaky.

What happens after I get my result?

You get an estimated HSK band and a direct link into that level's word table, sorted in frequency order so the first words you drill are the ones you will meet most often. No signup step sits in between.
